Maddox Farms in Warren County offers all-natural CBD products | Nvdaily

FRONT ROYAL — Kyle Maddox and Sarah Kerns say they know first hand the benefits of CBD oil.

The couple, who launched a line of cannabidiol — commonly known as CBD — products through their company Maddox Farms in early 2020 say they see its benefits for managing anxiety and skin conditions and helping with sleep, digestion and pain.

According to a recent study, about 60% of Americans have tried or currently use cannabidiol.

“We met right at the time when the 2018 Farm Bill was allowing us to do this and we realized that we both had kind of independent ideas to invest in the hemp industry,” said Maddox, 42. “We know the value of cannabis as medicine and hemp for fiber and all those things and since it’s a high value crop and we had enough land and investment money to get started, we decided to try it out.”

Maddox added that he typically treats pains and itching from insect bites with Maddox Farms products, which include salves, creams, tinctures, massage oil and shower and shampoo bars.

“I’ve just known the value of cannabis for a long time for medicine and for healing. Having a plant that we can grow on an acre of land and actually make a profit with was something that made sense. Not too many people were doing this at the time,” Maddox said. “It works. My family uses it for arthritis, digestion, as a sleep aid. I know a lot of people enjoy the benefits of it for anxiety.”

Kerns, 39, said her interest in the product was holistic.

“I’ve always had a priority of families being their healthiest selves and everyone having an opportunity for true healing,” said Kerns. “As a mom, I use CBD products for me and my kids to give the pure, natural organic natural forms of healing.”

The pair planted their first crops in 2020 on a couple of acres on Maddox’s 100-acre family farm on Route 619, where his grandparents, the late Cecil and Della Burke, grew hay and, at one time, raised cattle.

“We wanted to try something different, use the farm land for beneficial things and create great medicine and all these things just kind of came together at the right time with us to decide to go for it,” said Maddox, who continues to work part time at his family’s business, Maddox Funeral Home.

Kerns and Maddox grow hemp for the flower that produces CBD oil, handling the entire process from the seed to the shelf.

“It’s labor intensive,” Maddox said, explaining that seeds are grown in a greenhouse for a month before moving to the fields for the three- to four-month growing season. “Sampling agents come out for compliance and we have it tested when we think it’s ready. It has to be harvested within 30 days of testing.”

Testing, testing and more testing is part of the process, the couple said.

Once the plants are harvested and dried, they go through a carbon dioxide extraction process, a “very clean, closed cycle system” that pulls the CBD oil from the plants, Maddox said. That extract goes through a full panel of testing to ensure that it’s safe from microbiological agents, pesticides, mold, bacteria and the like, they said.

The CBD products created at Maddox Farms are full spectrum, meaning they are pulled straight from the plant. They have not been remediated for THC, Maddox said, noting that they have a “tiny bit” of THC.

“Anything we create or grow or sell has to have less than 0.3% THC in it. It’s so low of an amount that it’s not psychoactive. It’s not going to get you high. But, if you take enough of a full spectrum CBD product you could still fail a drug test for marijuana,” he said.

The final product, after it goes through batch recipes created by the couple, is then tested again to verify cleanliness and to determine the exact CBD percentage.

Kerns said that the couple spent a great deal of time creating the recipes.

“We created all of that. We did a lot of testing and worked together to see what both of us liked as far as potency,” Kerns said. “With all of our topicals we also worked with somebody who is a masseuse professionally so she helped guide us through that process. That took a lot of reflection and work I feel like.”

Added Maddox, “We’re totally vertically integrated, which means we grow the plant, harvest the plant. We process it. We create the recipes. We batch it ourselves. We label it ourselves. We sell it ourselves. From the ground up, it’s all us.”

A child development specialist who works with parents and children with behavioral deviations and emotional dysregulation, Kerns operates Madrona Wellness in addition to her role with Maddox Farms. She said the two businesses work hand in hand.

They host joint events on the property, where families can shop a small apothecary there.

“It’s all kind of intertwined. Plant medicine is important to me,” Kerns said, adding that she became interested in the role it can play in health and healing when several older members of her family were diagnosed with cancer and turned to plant medicine for help.

“I wanted to know more about why and how it affects us internally. It actually heals the cells instead of masking what’s going on. Now it’s become a passion,” she said.

Maddox Farms products are available at area events, online and in a few retail stores.
