No notice given as Silver Airways shutters, halts TLH flight services

The long-beleaguered Silver Airways, which flies in and out of Tallahassee, abruptly shut down its operations and cancelled all flights as of June 11.

The Fort Lauderdale-based regional airline posted a one-paragraph travel alert notice on its website to alert its customers.

“We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025,” the notice said. “In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver’s flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.”

It went on to say customers should not go to the airport and “all credit card purchases should be refundable through your credit card company or your travel agency.”

Saddled with financial woes, the Fort Lauderdale-based regional carrier canceled a string of flights earlier this year in Tampa and Orlando and, in December, filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The bankruptcy filing came three months after the airline announced plans to expand its statewide network with another route from Tallahassee to Tampa beginning in October 2024, along with a daily flight to Nassau in the Bahamas and three flights each day to Key West.

Silver Airways shut down at TLH

TLH Airport Director David Pollard said the airline had one 9:05 a.m. flight scheduled to depart June 11; passengers were at the airport, unaware of the cancellation.

Pollard said the airport received no notice of the flight cancellations prior to the travel alert that was posted on Silver Airways’ website and what circulated on social media. He couldn’t provide the number of passengers impacted by the abrupt shutdown.

Leading up to the current shutdown, Pollard said the airline had been downsizing services.

“There’s been a series of cancellations, which is kind of the day-to-day operational aspect of things, and they were cancelling flights somewhat regularly on us,” Pollard said.

In March, Pollard told the Tallahassee Democrat that the airport would be requesting the money Silver Airways collects from passenger-facility charges on the airport’s behalf be paid back to the city.

“We have received several payments since earlier this year. As we move forward, we will be reconciling any final payments (and) amounts that may be due,” Pollard said.

He added: “They’ve had trouble at other airports and closed down the Orlando operation, some destinations in the Caribbean that were getting shut down and all that. So this is actually not a big surprise.”
