Taiwan’s Cabinet has approved a significant budget, amounting to NT$11.4 billion (around US$370 million), to promote a tourism enterprise to grow both inbound and outbound tourism. With a focus on new tourist facilities, landmark routes, and all-around tourism to Taiwan from 2026 to 2029, the planned project, based on the enhancement of existing tourist infrastructural facilities, will examine new tourism developments. Positively, and given the goal of encouraging a domestic growth of 10%, the government is aiming for a tourism revenue of NT$1.2 trillion for the years to come.
This is the first and, likely, the predominant tourism growth and enhancement plan for Taiwan. With the development of landmark routes and the integration of unique green tourism models, the plan aspires to the creating the first inter island eco tourism circuit. This will ensure that a sustainable tourism model for the planned routes will be established. The enhancement of existing tourism routes will certainly promote inter island tourism as the planned routes will be the first of their kind.
Developing Landmark Routes to Connect Taiwan’s Scenic Spots
One of the core elements of the tourism project is the creation of two landmark routes that will connect major scenic areas throughout Taiwan. The project will focus on developing 10 major tourism locations, stretching from Alishan in the central region to Kenting at the southern tip of the island. These routes will allow visitors to explore Taiwan’s diverse natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, all while ensuring that the travel experience is seamless and sustainable.
Among the key locations that will benefit from this initiative are iconic sites such as Alishan, a famous mountain range known for its breathtaking sunrise views and scenic hiking trails, and Sun Moon Lake, a picturesque body of water surrounded by lush forests and cultural landmarks. The East Coast and Yushan National Park, with their dramatic landscapes and ecological diversity, will also be central to the new tourism routes, offering visitors the chance to explore some of Taiwan’s most pristine environments.
By linking these locations through well-planned routes, the project aims to encourage longer stays and increase the number of visitors traveling between regions. The focus will be on creating easy access, ensuring that tourists can travel between these scenic destinations with minimal effort, and maximizing the economic benefits for the local communities.
Aiming to Increase Domestic Travel by 10%
Taiwan’s Tourism Administration, under the leadership of Deputy Director-General Huang Shih-fang, has set a goal to increase domestic travel by 10% as a result of this project. With Taiwan’s rich cultural diversity, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant cities, the island has long been a popular destination for local tourists. However, the new initiative seeks to encourage even more Taiwanese residents to explore their own country, boosting the tourism sector and supporting local economies.
The emphasis on domestic tourism is particularly important as Taiwan looks to recover and diversify its tourism industry. By improving infrastructure and connectivity, the project will make it easier for local tourists to visit new and exciting destinations across Taiwan. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to reduce over-commercialization in certain areas, ensuring that tourism remains a sustainable and enriching experience for both residents and visitors.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Travel and Sustainability
In line with global tourism trends, the Taiwanese government is committed to promoting eco-friendly travel as part of this new initiative. Premier Cho Jung-tai emphasized the importance of blending Taiwan’s diverse stories, landscapes, and cultures into the tourism experience, while also encouraging more sustainable and responsible travel practices. The project aims to provide tourists with options that minimize their environmental impact, such as electric vehicle rentals, sustainable accommodations, and eco-friendly tourism experiences.
Taiwan’s commitment to sustainability extends to addressing issues related to the over-commercialization of popular tourist spots. Many areas in Taiwan, particularly old streets and heritage sites, have become overcrowded with tourists, which can negatively impact local communities and the environment. As part of the new tourism plan, efforts will be made to revitalize these areas, restoring their cultural integrity while providing a more balanced and sustainable tourism model.
Business Tourism and Incentives for Overseas Taiwanese Travelers
The Taiwanese government is also looking to capitalize on the growing trend of “business tourism,” which combines work and leisure. In addition to attracting international visitors, the government plans to offer incentives for business trips, specifically targeting overseas Taiwanese nationals. These initiatives will allow professionals to mix work with leisure, providing them with the opportunity to explore Taiwan’s cultural and natural attractions during their trips.
Business tourism is expected to play a significant role in the future of Taiwan’s tourism economy. With global interest in combining business with travel, this initiative will provide a new avenue for attracting international visitors while boosting tourism revenue.
Investment in Infrastructure and Services to Improve the Visitor Experience
As part of the tourism project, the Taiwanese government plans to invest heavily in infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to transportation systems, visitor centers, and tourist facilities. The focus will be on creating a seamless and enjoyable experience for travelers, ensuring that Taiwan’s tourism infrastructure can accommodate an increased number of visitors while maintaining the highest standards of service quality.
Additionally, the project will involve training for tourism professionals to improve service quality and hospitality. The goal is to provide tourists with an exceptional experience, making Taiwan a destination where they feel welcomed, valued, and eager to return.
The Economic Impact and Future of Taiwan’s Tourism Industry
The NT$11.4 billion investment in Taiwan’s tourism sector is expected to generate significant economic benefits. By increasing domestic travel and attracting more international visitors, the project aims to create new jobs, support local businesses, and enhance Taiwan’s global tourism profile. The government expects the initiative to contribute NT$1.2 trillion to the tourism sector, underscoring the importance of tourism as a key pillar of Taiwan’s economy.
Taiwan’s tourism sector has great potential for growth, particularly in niche markets like eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and luxury travel. By promoting Taiwan as a destination with diverse attractions and a commitment to sustainability, the government aims to create a long-term, resilient tourism economy that benefits both the local population and international visitors.
A Bright Future for Taiwan’s Tourism Sector
Taiwan’s tourism budget allocation of NT$11.4 billion demonstrates positive growth towards a more connected, less sustainable tourism sector. Offering greater, more accessible, and greener tourism options, the Taiwanese tourism sector embraces responsible tourism.
Taiwan’s reputation as a tourism hotspot will grow, announcing the island’s cultural, modern, and natural beauty to the world. In the midst of global economic recovery, there will be positive growth, not for the first time, for the Taiwanese tourism sector and the global tourism community will be the first to amen the positive changes, exciting for locals as well.
