Delta Air Lines
is making headlines. The Atlanta-based carrier is among the largest in the world, and will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Currently one of the most profitable airlines in the United States, Delta is celebrated by customers and investors alike as a respectable carrier.
However, given the dynamic and oftentimes unpredictable nature of airline operations, even the best carriers can struggle at times. Delta’s main hub, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
, just encountered a major snowstorm that caused mass flight disruptions.

To make matters worse, in the midst of the storm, a Minneapolis-bound Delta 757-300 was forced to conduct an evacuation on the runway due to engine issues. Following these events, Delta has been working diligently to restore standard operations and to minimize the disruption’s impact on other customers.
Impacts of the winter storm in Atlanta
The winter storm that came through the southeastern United States caused major delays and cancelations in Atlanta. The airport is the busiest in the United States and for locally-based Delta Air Lines, making the ramifications of these disruptions widespread.

In the wake of the winter storm, Delta is advising all Atlanta passengers to arrive at the airport three hours ahead of their flight’s scheduled departure time. This recommendation was based on security wait times stretching longer than usual. As of 12:00 ET Saturday, about 375 flights had been canceled between mainline Delta operations and Delta Connection flights.

Delta aims to assist disrupted customers
While Delta is working to return to standard operations as quickly as possible, many elements of the customer experience remain altered as the airport and airline recover from a day full of delays and cancelations on Friday. In addition to arriving at the airport earlier, Delta reminded passengers that there is a ban on any unaccompanied minors in Atlanta through Monday.

To help customers further, Delta is waiving checked baggage fees through the end of Saturday for passengers traveling on Delta-operated flights (it reminded customers that this offer does not apply to flights departing Amsterdam, as ground handling in the city is performed by Delta’s partner KLM). Refunds will be issued in the coming days for customers who have already paid for their bags.
Meanwhile, a travel waiver still exists for select destinations across the Southeast United States. This gives customers with itineraries in the region enhanced flexibility to cancel or change their flights. Delta also reminded customers if a flight delay causes a passenger to miss their connecting flight, the airline will work to rebook the traveler on the next available service.
Rebooking options for customers
Should customers be faced with significant delays, Delta offers several options to adjust their itinerary. Passengers can use the Fly Delta app or visit the Delta website to change their itinerary themselves. Domestic passengers stuck with a delay longer than three hours and who opt not to fly are entitled to a full refund. The same is true if a flight gets canceled and the customer opts not to fly on a rebooked itinerary.

If passengers are not immediately rebooked following a cancelation, Delta encourages them to reach out to the airline’s customer service team either in the airport or via messaging. If an itinerary is partially flown but cannot be completed, Delta will issue a refund for the forfeited legs of the trip.
Atlanta is at the heart of Delta’s operations
Atlanta is by far the most important hub for Delta Air Lines. In fact, the airline is slated to have its busiest year yet from the Georgia hub. When disruptions occur in Atlanta, they can easily spiral throughout the rest of the Delta network, or even the networks of its partners through SkyTeam alliance like KLM, Air France, and Aeromexico.

Restoring Atlanta operations will assist Delta in enhancing reliability across its network. It seems that through temporary enhanced flexibility and more guidance to passengers, Delta is aiming to return to standard operations as quickly as possible.
