Lucknow Zoo set for Eco-Tourism makeover with new attractions worth Rs 1.91 Crore

Lucknow’s iconic Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden is stepping into a new phase of eco-friendly development as the Tourism Department rolls out a Rs 1.91 crore project designed to make the zoo greener, more engaging, and more enjoyable for families.

State Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh on Friday said the initiative aims to create an attractive and environmentally aligned space that especially appeals to children and school groups.

As part of the upgrades, new kids’ play swings—designed with international safety standards—have been installed. Families and young visitors are already responding positively, as these play areas add a fun, interactive element to zoo visits.

To enhance the natural feel of the campus, the zoo is adding bamboo furniture, including seating clusters, gazebo-style rest points, and open relaxation spots. These additions blend with the green surroundings and contribute to an eco-friendly, warm and welcoming atmosphere.

A new system of modern signage is also being installed across the zoo to help visitors navigate easily. Clear direction boards, information panels and safety indicators will make movement across enclosures simpler for families and schoolchildren.

Minister Jaiveer Singh said the broader aim is to position Lucknow Zoo as a leading ecotourism and family recreation centre. With the upgraded facilities, the zoo is expected to attract increased footfall not just from the city but from across the state.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “The Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden is an identity of Lucknow, and we are developing it as a modern ecotourism model. Our effort is to offer children, families and tourists a better, safer and nature-connected experience. Through the approved project of Rs 1.91 crore, we are adding attractive swings, bamboo seating spaces, and new signage. We aim to make Lucknow Zoo a green, environmentally sensitive and world-class destination that also inspires people toward nature and wildlife conservation.”

Established in 1921, Lucknow Zoo remains one of North India’s oldest and most cherished zoological parks. Named after Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the zoo has housed diverse animals and bird species for more than a century, evolving into a centre for education, research, and recreation.
